What is Couching? (And Why It Makes This Quilt Extra Special)
To give Piper’s quilt an eye-catching, tactile quality, I used a technique called couching. Couching is a textile technique where a heavy thread, plush cord, or soft yarn is laid across the top of the fabric and stitched down along the surface with fine thread.
Rather than flat embroidery or basic printed fabric, couching creates a rich, raised 3D texture that literally pops off the quilt. For a growing baby, this tactile element is wonderful for sensory exploration—tiny fingers love feeling the raised curves of the flowers and text. For Piper’s quilt, I couched soft, dimensional peach yarn across a subtle floral backing to outline gorgeous oversized blooms and weave her name into the message: "Dream Big, Little One," finished off with a matching peach binding.
