From Beachfront to Home Centerpiece: The Quilt Story Behind "Ormond Waves"

Hello, quilty friends!

There’s nothing quite like the feeling of watching a project transition from concept to creation, and then, from floor layout to a stunning reality. Today, I want to take you behind the design of my latest custom piece, a true labor of love we’ve fondly named, "Ormond Waves," and show you how it found its perfect beginning, and its final, stunning, home.

The Spark of Inspiration

Every quilt starts with a spark. For "Ormond Waves," that spark was the beautiful, sun-drenched coast near Ormond Beach, Florida. I wanted to capture the vibrant, playful energy of the sea, the soft textures of the sand, and the sense of peace that comes from a perfect beach day.

The process started, like so many of my designs, with a lot of thought and an unusual beginning. I actually laid out the entire panel sequence on the floor of my studio to get the flow right. I wanted the quilt to tell a story, like a series of beachfront snapshots. The "panel-style" format allowed me to dedicate each horizontal band to a different element of that perfect day.

Designing the "Ormond Waves" Panel Sequence

We crafted five distinct scenes:

***  The Sun and the Horizon: A warm, smiling sun, a cheerful sailboat, and a soaring kite against a gentle, wavy blue sky.

***   Shells on the Sand: A collection of sea stars, sand dollars, and conch shells, designed with the softest, wave-like, dimensional quilting to look like they are resting on damp sand.

***   Treasures and Tides: A row of perfectly positioned conch shells, with the same dimensional wave stitching to add texture and depth.

***   Children of the Sand: The most complex section, featuring a charming, two-figure scene of children playing with a sandcastle. The dimensional stitching is crucial here, making the sand and the children feel real.

***   The Sea Creature Border: Surrounding it all, a wide, vibrant, multi-colored border overflowing with tiny, intricately appliquéd fish, crabs, and turtles, celebrating the life within the waves.

The purple-blue sashing provides that perfect pop of contrast, like a deep pool in the distance, framing each vignette.

Finding its Home

Now, "Ormond Waves" has found its home. While it began as a beachfront layout, it has transitioned into a stunning wall centerpiece, a piece of art that brings the comfort of artistry into any space. It’s no longer just a collection of fabric and stitch; it is a memory of a perfect day, frozen in time.
